The Choice Is Yours
The Choice Is Yours is a program that gives low-income Minneapolis families more options to attend suburban schools. The districts participating in The Choice Is Yours are part of the West Metro Education Program.

All Minneapolis students who are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch may participate in the program. A total of 2,000 openings (starting with 500 in the first year) in suburban districts will be available to Minneapolis students between 2001-2002 and 2004-2005. Minneapolis students attending suburban schools through The Choice Is Yours program receive free transportation to and from their suburban schools.

The program divides the Minneapolis district into two sections — north and south — using I-394 as the approximate dividing line. Students living in the north section can attend the following districts:

  • Columbia Heights
  • Hopkins
  • Robbinsdale
  • St. Anthony/New Brighton
  • St. Louis Park
  • Wayzata

Students living in the south section can attend the following districts:

  • Edina
  • Hopkins
  • Richfield
  • St. Louis Park
  • Eden Prairie

To participate in The Choice Is Yours program, families must complete a state open-enrollment form. The forms are available at from all WMEP districts or by calling the Minnesota Department of Children, Families and Learning at 1-877-766-5485. The form must be completed and sent to the school district of your choice by January 15 of each year.
